Captain P A Stroude Royal Navy

Commanding Officer HMS Portland

&

Captain Anti-Submarine Warfare

Raised on the Wirral and educated at Birkenhead School, Paul Stroude joined the Royal Navy in 1991. Following basic sea training he read Naval Architecture and Shipbuilding at the University of Newcastle-Upon-Tyne, graduating with Honours in 1995.

During his seagoing career as a surface Warfare Officer he has served in all of the world's oceans, predominantly in frigates and patrol boats, and operated with numerous other navies, coastguards and air forces. Progressing by stages from Officer of the Watch to Navigator and then Principal Warfare Officer, he additionally served on the UK Maritime Battle Staff (2007-09). As a Lieutenant he commanded the Hunt Class Northern Ireland patrol vessel HMS BRECON (2002-2003) and, as a Commander, the Type 23 frigate HMS ARGYLL (2010-12).

His operational experience encompasses all elements of delivering maritime security, including counter-terrorism, counter-narcotics, interdiction and embargo operations, infrastructure protection and fishery protection. Geographically such operations have ranged from Hong Kong to the coast of the former Yugoslavia (Op GRAPPLE 1993), Northern Ireland (Op SEALION 2002-03), Iraq (Op TELIC 2007 and 2008) and the Arabian Gulf and Indian Ocean (Op KIPION 2011-12).

In Joint appointments he has served as a member of Directing Staff on the UK Advanced Command and Staff Course (2012-14) and, most recently, within Minister of State for the Armed Forces' Defence Operational Capability auditing team at the Ministry of Defence (2014-2015). He assumed Command of HMS PORTLAND on promotion to Captain in December 2015.

Married, with two young daughters who dominate his free time, he now lives in Hampshire and, when able, enjoys DIY, sailing, skiing, reading and fly-fishing.
